blueday2008

one of the more important days of the year for us to reflect. i am sure that most of us have been touched by
mental health . some closer than others no doubt. i will always remember my uncle coming to town. generally having
had too much to drink, generally off his medication. but us as kids not really understanding the illness he suffered.
i guess in some respects it was not really the type of thing that was spoken about. was there an element of embarrassment?
possibly. fear? probably. not to mention the element of surprise.
he was a genuinely nice guy, highly capable, could sell ice to the Eskimos type of guy. just really struggled with his
illness. as a kid i recall taking him back to one of the many institutions he was in and out of. it was a pretty
sombre affair. as my uncle hopped out of the car a lady decided to hop in. she started touching my head and was
very nice and clearly happy to be in the car. me and my brother were in the car so as two young lads do, we started
giggling, so did she. the episode was probably only a few minutes but seemed much longer. i remember wondering
why these people acted "differently" and why they were kept away from the general public.
i am very glad that today we are able to communicate far more openly and honestly about mental health. it can only
be of benefit to all of us.
may we all rejoice tomorrow in this most important day and ask ourselves: is there anything i can do to help?
